Melanocortin and reproductive hormone research

This collection brings together peptides used to study two signalling systems: the central melanocortin pathway and the hormonal axis that controls reproduction. PT-141 and the melanocortin pathway

PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a cyclic heptapeptide derived from Melanotan 2. It acts as an agonist at melanocortin receptors, particularly MC3R and MC4R, which are expressed in the central nervous system. That makes it a research tool for studying melanocortin signalling in the brain, as distinct from the pigmentation pathway studied with the Melanotan peptides through the MC1 receptor. Melanotan 2 binds a broader set of melanocortin receptors, which is why the two compounds are used to answer different research questions.

Kisspeptin and the HPG axis

Kisspeptins are peptides encoded by the KISS1 gene that bind the KISS1 receptor, also called GPR54. They sit at the top of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, where they stimulate the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), and they are central to research on puberty, fertility and reproductive endocrinology. Melanotan 1 and Melanotan 2, synthetic α-MSH analogues, complete the melanocortin side of the collection.

What is PT-141?
